Phil Humber, Pelfrey, Milledge amongst top prospects promoted

With rosters expanding to 40 Willie Randolph announced today that the team will be adding eight players to their major league roster. Not all of the players will join the team right away since the AAA season is not ofically over until Monday, but the call-ups were announced anyway. Most of the call-ups were obvious, with one exception. Here is a run down of the eight players and their possible rolls for the major league team:
Kelly Stinett C- The 36 year old lifetime backup hit .228 earlier this year for the Yankees, and will be the third string catcher for the Mets until Castro returns, if he does. Right now Mike DiFelice is the second string catcher, but he has not received much playing time, as LoDuca has played in eleven straight games, but will probably get the day off on Sunday.
Ricky Ledee OF- Ledee, another former Yankee, was dreadful in his brief time with the Mets. The 33 year old went 1-15 with five strikeouts and no extra base hits. Ledee will be an extra left handed bat off of the bench, but will probably not get too many starts. Chavez, Tucker, and Milledge are all ahead of him on the depth chart right now.
Lastings Milledge OF- Milledge was re-called for a few reasons. To get some more major league experience as Willie most likely begins to rest some of his outfielders more and more as the season winds down, and also to learn a few lessons from "big brother" Floyd. In a double header today with the Norfolk Tides Milledge went a combined 3-5 with a walk.
Mike Pelfrey RHP- Pelfrey may or may not get a start here and there to rest Trachsel, or a pitcher who falls victim to soreness. Pelfrey will mostly be pitching out of the bullpen mainly for major league experience, but barring a handful of injuries Pelfrey will not make the postseason roster.
Brian Bannister RHP- Bannister pitched today in AAA and allowed one earned run over seven innings. Bannister appears to be back to full strength again, and will be pitching out of the bullpen for the Mets.
Heath Bell RHP- Heath will resume his roll as the bullpen candyman, and he will also resume his role as the mop-up man. If the Mets have a starter go 3-4 innings Bell will most likely get the call, with Darren Oliver pitching the sixth and seventh inning more often.
Royce Ring LHP- Ring was promoted like some of the other prospects, to get major league experience, but he was also promoted because he is left handed. Ring has dominated in AAA, but has struggled mightily with his control in the majors. A possible cause for this is that maybe he has a lot of jitters pitching in the majors, and jitters will only go away with experience, and that is why he is back up in New York.
Phil Humber RHP- The lone surprise call-up. Humber is still recovering from Thommy John surgery, and he has yet to even compete in a full season. Humber has already been anounced as playing in the Arizona Fall League, and the Mets may want to get him a few outings here and there to keep his arm strength up for the AFL. I would not expect Humber to get a start, unless Willie moves to a six man rotation and wants to see what he hasin Humber for a potential chance in the rotation next season.
